It is quite confusing to hear them say depression is good for you. But when is depression good for you? If your your being sad or depressed can transform you to a better person then depression is good for you. Still others complain that depression is a killer and that there’s nothing good in it. It is harmful and destructive. There must be a sound reason why people concluded it this way, so whether depression is good for you or not, let's find out.

How does it feel to be depressed? Notice the common symptoms of the depression below and see if there could be anything good in it.

  • Sadness and loneliness
  • fatigue and decreased energy
  • feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • sleeping problems
  • irritability
  • loss of interest in activities and work
  • overeating or appetite loss
  • digestive problems
  • empty feeling and sadness
  • suicide attempts
  • difficulty concentrating and making decisions
  • poor judgment

Reviewing those symptoms, you cannot still see why depression is good for you. Who wants to be sad and lonely? Who wants to suffer all these symptoms? But wait! I can see a shade of light in this matter. Yes there is positive side of being depressed that will tell us that depression is good for you.

Let us consider some positive results of depression

1) If you are depressed of being guilty but you endeavor to solve it, you are happy about your accomplishment. It teaches you a lesson and you learn from your mistakes. You manage not to do it again and it will make you a better person. Perfect!

2) If you feel sad and you find ways to make yourself happy, you struggle against the force of depression, and you finally discover that you can help yourself, you are hero. Knowing your depression better and knowing how to manage it has good effects on you.

3) During depression your brain spins a lot even you are sleeping. You give way to lots of meditations. You will discover more about the meaning of life than others who see life as easy come, easy go. After you come back to your senses, you will be more ready to fight the world, you will understand what is all there is to life, that life is fleeting and you must make the best out of it while you still have it. That is another good reason why depression is good for you.

4) Your helping yourself will make others happy and lighten their loads. And you will be laying a good pattern for other depressed people to follow. You will be a living testimony that depression can be conquered. Isn’t that a big encouragement?

To sum it up; why we say that depression is good for you is like an oyster who produces pearls. When will this oyster produce pearls? When they are irritated by the sands of the sea, their body they can't take it. Because of this irritation they produce useless and fine pearls. When you are depressed you are easily irritated like an oyster. You can either make your situation worst or you can develop desirable pearl-like qualities. But unlike the oyster, the fine result depends on you.

These are the reasons why they say that depression is good for you. It is not the pain and suffering you encounter but the freedom you and others will enjoy after your victory. The lessons you learned and the success you achieved from your struggle are trophies awarded to you.

But after we conquer depression, we should set our mind that the war is not over yet. There are many things that can trigger or add to it. Unwanted tragedies disturbed the joy that was enjoyed by many. Everyone feel sad and depressed at times. The rich, the poor, the healthy and the sick experience the same as you. Setting our mind that the war is not over yet can alert us and make us be always aware to push aside negative views that attempts to come up in our thinking again.

Today there are many reasons why we get depressed. We feel hopeless and negative of what this life can bring. Unforeseen occurrences in life come so suddenly. It weakens the mind and squeezes the heart. When we lost our love one either separation or the curse of death, we surely get depressed. So when we feel we are starting to get depressed, we must do something right from the start. If you feel that depression is slowly creeping in the entrance of your mind, you should not let it dwell for long time. To let those sadness and negative views remain in you, you are actually welcoming major depression to lodge and become a permanent resident in your life. Minor and major depression can ruin our day and our lives if we are not aware of it. As we had said, it is the lessons we learn and the success we achieved when we conquer depression that is good and not its dominion over us.

How do you know if you are starting to be depressed? You know that by yourself and you must have to accept it. When you are sad, sit down and think what makes you feel that way? Instead of entertaining that sadness for long, do something. Don’t stay in your room and isolate yourself. Think of things you enjoy doing and not the things you don’t enjoy. Be with friends who understand you and talk to them. If constant loneliness is dominating you, let your love ones know. Don’t hide it. Their being informed can help you because they will deal with you accordingly. If they don’t know that you are going through they will think you are insane and the more you get frustrated.

There are many practical ways to fight against depression and its cruel symptoms. Medical treatments are from doctors, counseling are from psychiatrist. Practical help and advices are from those who experienced and suffered the same depression and survived it, but remember constant struggle is from you.

I suffered from depression because of my childhood history. I was out the door of my parent’s house when I was yet young but I survived. I understand the reasons why other say depression is good for you and why it is not good at all. And that is why I made this poem below;

Nice article. I probably would have found this hub difficult to read at the beginning of my journey with depression but, years later, I do view my experience with depression as more than just feeling overwhelmed and weighed down by a giant dark emotion.

I try to see my own depression as a healthy emotion which, in my case, has just run amok a bit. Evolutionary psychologists have suggested that the emotion of depression has survived because, to some degree, it is of benefit to mankind. When we are depressed it signals to us that we need to change our current situation and usually motivates us to do so with the eventual reward being the depression lifting.

Yes Leptirela, I suffered from depression too since I was young. The fact that there was no one to confide with, made me tough to fight and survive. Now even many years had passed, sometimes sadness knocks on my door but I know I have the strength to say NO. And I want to share how I gain my strength in fighting against my sadness.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment

There are loads off people out in the world who, do not and will not ever admit to being depressed.

I think writing more about this subject makes everyone aware that it is more common than we'd like to think, and also help sufferers know they are not at all alone.

I went through years of this,,, many factors as well as PTSD ... I was depressed because I didnt know what I was suffering or what was happening and why ?! when I finally found what it was I was able to deal with it and I am so happy for it..It hasnt gone away , though I am still dealing with it and am much stronger than before.

Thank you for sharing this hub , its a great one.

If I had read it 3 years back I would not dare make a comment .. but I hope you take it all as a compliment

AWESOME AND UP
