How To Stay Safe On Social Networking Sites
We know nothing is safe these days wherever you are, at home, at work, when we are traveling and sitting down in the park or anywhere. Social networking sites are worse since we only see the screen in front of us.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe on networking sites;
1. If you sign up for an account, be sure to set your privacy settings. You must edit all possible settings such as:
- Control who can see your profile, your post, your photos , you videos and etc.
- control how you connect with people
- Control what happens when friends tag you or your content
- Control what gets shared with apps, games and websites
2. When posting in your wall, you must always be careful of what you post. Remember you are sharing in a public domain site. You don’t have the real privacy. The friends of your friends can see you and can even read your messages.
- How to stay safe on networking sites is that confidential and personal matters are not to be discussed in your wall. Never expose too much about you. If you are a teacher, you will just be surprise to hear the next day that your student will ask about what he read in your post. Don’t post your personal life story, if you trying to protect your reputation.
- You may want to call your friend or relative on the phone or email them if it is to inform them that you are leaving your house for few days. This will give a good sign for thieves and burglars.
3. Don’t just accept anyone who invites you to be his friend; it’s good to be suspicious in the internet. There are lots of thieves that hang around in the net looking for easy prey. Once they get you to accept them as a friend they will get your contact information and you can be a victim of their evil schemes.
- This an important step on how to stay safe on networking sites because the internet is full of fraud and cheating, making money fast is the most effective strategy they will offer to mislead you. In any attempts like this, don’t get trapped. Money doesn’t fall like rain, and they don’t come overnight. To earn money in the internet takes months to start for just a few bucks. Successful internet marketers start earning decent income after a year or even more. So be discreet in dealing with people you don’t know.
4. After you are done in the internet be sure to sign out properly. If you leave your account open, you are running the risk that people can post materials on your page. So be sure to sign out.
5. Protect your password

It is an amazing time in history to have so much information at our fingertips and yet it is frightening.
Thank you for sharing.
That's right JenJen,
That's why I created a hub out of it since many people especially those who are new cannot see the danger of it. My friend nearly bought an amazon store for the amount of 30 bucks every month. Joining Amazon is free but if a person don't know he will can be trapped by scammers
Thanks JenJen for sharing your thoughts
I recently had the misfortune of watching my friend's Facebook account get hacked, and this person was posting horrible comments as quick as they were being deleted. Facebook can be hacked, so it is extremely important not to accept friend requests from people you don't know and don't have mutual friends with. I have three friends on my friend requests list that I haven't accepted because we have no mutual friends.
Thanks ytsenoh,
Yes social networking is really popular. It useful but we need to be careful.
Thanks for reading
Very nice hub. It always amazes me how someone has over 400 friends on facebook, I mean, who has that many real friends? I think people get caught up in the numbers and why you would accept a friend invite if you don't even know the person amazes me. We can't be that trusting just because we're sitting behind a computer screen. Thanks again for this piece.

Don't be afraid my friend, as long as you know how to stay safe, you are safe. It just a matter of heeding warning signs like obeying traffic signs on the road.
