Why do we need to know how many smoke detectors should be in a home? Because want to be sure that we will have enough to install to every possible corner of our house that needs such detectors. We also want to calculate the cost so we can set our budget to avail them.

Why we need smoke detectors? Fire accidents happen unexpectedly, we want our properties and lives to be safe. We don't want the cruelty of fire to ruin our security and future.

Factors that may be the cause of fire accidents can be negligence, forgetfulness, carelessness, old appliances, the cruelty of others or can be purely an accident. What maybe the cause, we need smoke alarms or smoke detectors to give as the warning that there is fire in our house. So how many smoke detectors should be in a home?

  • Smoke detectors should be put inside bedrooms or at least 10 feet from bedrooms so it can easily awaken someone who is sleeping in times of fire accident.
  • It is strongly recommended that smoke detectors be placed on ceilings or high upon walls, no more than 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling.
  • To give the smoke alarm the best chance to detect fire, be sure not to install them near any source of heat which can accidentally set them off.
  • Don’t install them in a place like near the shower, the heating or conditioning duct and any place inside your house that the air is not moving.
  • If you install a smoke detector within 20 feet of the kitchen or a fireplace, make sure the alarm's sensitivity is reduced. This because the when we cook the smoke goes up and the smoke alarm can easily detect the smoke while we are cooking. We don’t like to be always terrified by false alarms. Also your installing smoke alarms must be at least 12 inches from any light fixtures.

When should a smoke detector be replaced?

  • A smoke detector should be replaced after 8 to 10 years of use. the batteries should be changed at least once every year
